A QUESTION SPARKED IT. THE LAND SHAPED IT. YOU WEAR IT.

The Story Behind Our Take
on Traditional Alaska Fashion

Alaska Traditional Fashion

Naataq Gear began with
one question:

“Is your Qaspeq waterproof?”

Alice Turuunuataq Bioff is an Inupiaq entrepreneur from Koyu, Alaska, and is the founder of Naataq Gear LLC, an Indigenous women-owned apparel company based in Nome. Established in 2018, Naataq Gear blends traditional Inupiaq Native clothing designs with modern materials, creating functional garments that honor her cultural heritage.

Growing up in Koyu, Bioff was immersed in a community rich with sewing traditions. She was surrounded by women who crafted qaspeqs and gaspeqs. Her mother was an avid sewer who played a significant role in nurturing her appreciation for traditional clothing. These early experiences influenced Bioff's passion for cultural expression through fashion.

The idea for Naataq Gear was sparked during Bioff's time as a tour guide aboard the cruise ship Crystal Serenity's first visit to Nome. A passenger admired her traditional kuspuk and inquired if it was waterproof. This question led Bioff to envision a modern, weather-resistant version of the garment. After years of development, she launched Naataq Gear, a company that offers not only the iconic jacket, but also the Siku Men's Jacket, Anugi Windbreaker, Nuna Fleece Vest, Atmik Youth Jackets and finally the newest edition, scrubs.

Berries and Traditional Design

The Inspiration Behind
Naataq Gear

It all begins with the Qaspeq (Kuspuk).

The Kuspuk is Alaska traditional clothing. Traditionally made from seal intestine and worn over fur parkas, the Kuspuk was essential to protect people from the elements.

As materials changed, so did the fabric, but the meaning stayed. Over time, its trim, shape, and colors became symbols, telling stories of family, village, and identity.

Naataq Gear carries that spirit forward. Our designs honor the shape, style, and significance of the Kuspuk, while using breathable, water-resistant hardshell materials, ready for rain, movement, and life today.
